Hanging The Heavy Bags From A Beam

If you plan to install your hanging bag in the basement or the garage, then look for an intense support beam or joist, that can withstand the bag’s weight and the aggressive strikes.

Step 1: Find A Supporting Beam Or Joist

You can find a joist by doing a knock test or by measuring the ceiling. The joist is usually placed 16-24 inches apart. In the knock test, you can knock along your ceiling and check the sound. If the sound is hollow, it means no joist behind, and if it produces a strong sound, it means there is a support joist behind. Moreover, you can use a stud finder too for finding joists.

Additionally, to hang a heavy bag from the ceiling joist, you can measure the ceiling and guess the joist or beam’s location. But still, you must knock to confirm whether it’s there or not. Besides, joist, you can also find a support beam that runs along with your ceiling vertically.

Step 2: Drill The Hole Into The Joist/Beam

After finding the supporting beam, you must drill a hole into it. But when you want to hang a heavy bag from a joist, you need a 2X6 wood plank to affix to the joists. This wood plank will serve as the base of your mount. Nicely attach the wood plank to the joist by using wood screws.

In the case of supporting beams, you can go for drilling holes without affixing the wood plank.

After that drill the holes in the wood plank and make sure you get an eye bolt for placing in the hole because hooks or any other means of hanging will not be that reliable for hanging a heavy bag from rafters. First, tighten the eye bolt with hands and then get a wrench to tighten it correctly.

Step 3: Hang The Bag

Now you must have got the heavy bag to hang. So get the chains of the bag and attach them to the corner of the bags. Now put an S-hook into the chains and hang it to the eye bolt that you affixed ceiling.

Step 4: Test After Hanging The Bag To S-hook

When you hang a heavy bag from a steel beam, then check whether it is securely attached or not. To check that you can hit it from different angles with both hands and feet. Moreover, if you see any weak spots rehang the bag.

Warning

  • Hanging heavy bags to the ceiling at your home gym might be dangerous because if it falls off, you can hurt yourself from its weight and chains.
  • Attaching the heavy bags at home might cause structural damage to your home.

Conclusion

Hanging heavy bags at home is not that difficult, but it only needs installment properly. A little mistake of yours can lead to significant risks so be mindful of where and how you are installing the heavy bag. Moreover, you also need to test the heavy bag before breaking into practice.
